Evelyn Gathings Rocks!
I’m extremely fond of her particular approach to the art of the paper doll. She seems to specialize in animals which just makes me like them even more.
But the real reason I’m blogging about this paper doll set now is that the little baby sister doll reminds me so very, very much of the fire-setting cat in my last post (yes, the baked apple cat). Seriously, check out that little face. That little “I’m mayhem, go ahead turn your back on me” face. This is a face I’d love to see on a Connie Smith doll.
The costumes in this set are very fine; though they look more Edwardian than Victorian to my eye. Yeah, I’m one of those historical detail people to whom the distinction Victorian/Edwardian makes a difference. Overall the colors and details throughout the set are fantastic as are the plethora of accessories.
I especially love the commentary on the costume pages. It’s borderline snarky while retaining a warm sweet surface layer. Click to enlarge the images, read it for yourself. Enjoy!
Hi, I have this book, I like Evelyn Gathings paperdolls, especielly animals
Hi! I got this book from a friend back in grade 5 – long ago, in the age before computers, let alone scanners – and cut them all out. Still have them, still use them regularly (on my office cubicle) but I’m looking for a full set of all the images without having to scan mine individually. Your scans are wonderful! Is there a chance of getting the rest of the pages?
I don’t post scans of full sets for copyright reasons. However, I do see this set (uncut) come up on ebay fairly regularly and at quite reasonable prices. I can certainly understand why you might want to make repros for use in decorating your work space. You could try temporarily mounting your cut pieces on a coordinating sheet of scrapbook paper and then scanning each resulting sheet. I’ve used tiny loops of painters tape (which I made even less sticky by first sticking it to my jeans) to good effect. Good Luck!
Thanks very much for your response. That was my original thought, to mount and scan them, but time has not been entirely kind to the little bits and pieces plus that snarky commentary you mentioned (and which I wished so much I could keep back then) would not be included.
So I’ve ordered the book from a used bookstore and keeping my fingers crossed that it will, indeed, arrive uncut!
When I did put them up in my latest office space, most of the comments were directed at that little baby cat. She seems to frighten people off!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you too!
Guess it’s just me that love, love, loves that crazy baby cat. Perhaps especially because she’s a bit scary.
I had this set! I cut them out. I spent hours playing with it, and making up stories! I loved paper dolls much better than actual dolls – I could make up whole plays in my head.
Always happy to hear from like-minded people. I used to take my paper dolls on car trips and have all manner of adventures while we got from here to there (and back again). Wonderful memories!

I just bought this book a couple of days ago to scan and dress the little kitty family up in Photoshop and share the cats wearing the clothes (without having to damage the book!) And you’re not alone with the “crazy baby cat.” I don’t find her scary. I find her adorable.
Glad to hear you are enjoying this great book. Good idea to do “virtual dress up” in Photoshop so that we can eat our cake and have it too. Yeah, that little cat baby rocks!
Thought you might like to see what I’ve done with the baby cat. The outfits were just too adorable!
